All in A Day’s Work

I got up and had my first paddle as a guide into the Everglades this morning. The kayaking here is so different from other environments; the water is shallow so you carry plants on your paddles at times (good work out), the Mangrove tunnels are so tight in places that it can take the paddle right out of your hand (easier to put in boat and use roots to pull yourself through) and oh, ALLIGATORS!

The first time I was at water level with an alligator a rush of adrenaline went through me. As I spent time out there I realized that like any other wild creature, unless threatened, they keep to themselves. It is fantastic to see them and learn more about their habits and life.

After 3 hours we returned to the van and pulled out the boats; while waiting to load we had the pleasure of seeing the rare Swallow-tailed Kite fly directly overhead. Each of the guests was able to see it well and were very excited, as was I.

After finishing the trip and cleaning and storing the equipment I went to my favorite spot for lunch. I had a burger and onion rings on the patio overlooking the marina and was entertained by 2 dolphins eating in the channel. All of the airboats and fishermen were also enjoying it, they told me that they usually don’t come in this far or stay this long.

The afternoon was spent taking my first airboat ride. It was exhilarating the way the boat slides around the corners to turn and the tight places it can go. We saw many alligators; one was even coaxed out to the boats! The birds here are incredible and they were everywhere…I am in heaven. The airboat was able to take us out into many ecosystems and it was good for me to see the differences.

So many adventures so little time. I can’t wait to see what happens at work tomorrow.

Everglades City

Driving over 2,000 miles and through eight states, I arrived in Everglades City in southwest Florida last evening. It is an amazing place with wildlife and nature all around.

The most common birds are the Northern Mockingbird, Common Grackle and Eurasian Collared Dove here in town and as you get into the wetter areas there are Great and Cattle Egrets, Moorhens and Gallinules, and Ibis.

I crossed through Panther territory on the road in and eventually want to visit and maybe volunteer at the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge run by US Fish and Wildlife.

Watch for more news on the EC, coming soon.
